Hair transplants have been famously misunderstood and maligned in the past. Hair transplants used to be associated with tacky, gaudy plugs that just drew even more attention to bald spots.
However, the science and technology that allows transplants to have their near-universal success rates, has developed in leaps and bounds since it was first introduced some 50 years ago; it is now a sophisticated and meticulous surgical procedure that allows hair to regenerate naturally.
Here is a look at how follicles are transplanted in order to bring back that full head of hair.
Why Do Follicles Begin To Shrink?
Over time, your hair follicles – as all living cells in your body – can begin to cease working as effectively as they once did. There a number of factors that can affect your follicles, including:
- Stress
- Poor nutrition
- Old age
- A family history of hair loss
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Illnesses affecting the skin
- Side effects of medication
All of these factors can cause your hair follicles to stop regenerating, or to suffocate, making hair growth impossible. But in the vast majority of hair loss cases involving pattern hair loss, there is one major culprit – dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
This male sex hormone, part and parcel of natural bodily development from puberty onward, also has the ability to bind to sites on hair follicles, which causes them to shrink prematurely. This is a completely natural process determined by your genetics, and becomes more likely with age – in fact, half of all men will suffer from this form of hair loss by the time they reach their 50s.
What Does A Transplant Do?
During a hair transplant, healthy hair follicles from elsewhere on the crown, are harvested, and then implanted into the skin (usually on the front of the head and scalp).
This procedure is able to be performed because not all hair follicles are affected by DHT in the same way. It appears that certain regions are much more vulnerable, but for many, there are still plenty of healthy follicles that are capable of producing the hairs that are required. A transplant removes the healthy, DHT-resistant follicles from around the scalp, and implants them to where they are most needed.
How Is Hair Implanted?
When the follicles have been harvested, and are ready to be transplanted, a skilled surgeon uses a special tool to create pits in the skin of the crown into which follicles are inserted. The body then begins to heal around the follicles, supplying them with the vital blood and nutrients they need to kick start the healing process.
While the procedure leaves microscopic scars, invisible to the naked eye, these quickly heal, and within a few short months new, strong, DHT-resistant hairs grow in place. Throughout the treatment, you will be able to meet regularly with your attending specialist who will help ensure that your results meet your expectations.
