Hair loss does not have to be a condition suffered in silence anymore. Medical and technical procedures have been refined over the course of the past 50 years to develop techniques that produce the closest possible thing to natural hair.
Hair transplants are a way of reassigning hair follicles from around the scalp to areas where balding and hair loss have taken hold. This technique essentially allows your hair to regrow in areas where it is most needed. Modern procedures like Follicular Unit Extraction allow surgeons to have unrivalled control in the orientation of your hair so that it exactly resembles how it looked before the hair loss occurred.
What is a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?
In an FUE hair transplant, individual follicles are selected from around the scalp and manually redistributed to mimic the orientation of natural hair. This means that surgeons have much greater control over the entire process. This technique has a typically shorter healing time and much less scarring as compared to its traditional counterpart. This means anyone undergoing FUE can get back on their feet in no time.
This technique is different from Follicular Unit Transplantation, an advanced form of the traditional methods, that involves removing a small tissue strip (giving rise to the characteristic strip scars), upon which small groups of follicular units are harvested and then transplanted to donor regions.
What Determines The Cost?
There are several factors that determine the cost of a FUE procedure. In general, FUT procedures are usually cheaper as it is costed on a per-graft basis, whereas FUE transplants are usually priced by individual follicle.
As noted above, the precise control needed to get results consistent with client expectations means that only the most skilled surgeons are able to perform FUE transplants. The technique is generally a lot more time-sensitive and labour intensive, as follicles must be removed individually, thereby leading to increased costs.
Additionally, because every scalp is different, everyone undergoing this treatment will have vastly different requirements (in terms of 100’s of follicles displaced). Any of the following individual requirements will have a significant bearing on the overall cost of an FUE procedure:
- Severity of hair loss
- Rate of hair loss
- Need for other concurrent treatments
- Quality and availability of donor hair
- Client expectations for hair regrowth
- Length of time spent on procedure to meet client expectations
